In May of 1985, my friend and fellow genealogist, Alain Rocheteau, sent me from Paris copies of some very interesting documents at the National Archives. These rare papers included two concerning the marriage of RENÉ ROCHETEAU to ELISABETH DELAUNAY celebrated on the 13 April, 1790 in the parish of St. Pierre of BAINET, near Jacmel which is situated on the southern coast of present day Haiti (then "St. Domingue") on the western side of the island of Hispaniola

It is interesting to note that this marriage occurred during the French colonial period the year before the beginning of the revolution on the island.

Other documents sent by Alain included the Death Certificate of René Rocheteau, the Birth Certificate of his son Eugene (both included and translated below) and several documents concerning members of the related Delaunay, Dourville, and De la Houssaye families.

The marriage of René and Elizabeth lasted about twelve and a half years until his death in December 1802. What became of the rest of their family is at the moment a mystery. French colonials could return to France at that time and reside, at La Rochelle, while receiving a government stipend or compensation for the loss of use of their lands. Whether the widow Elizabeth or her children knew of this and took advantage of it would be most useful in continuing the research.

Meanwhile, the documents that I have described follow with more of the documentation on Elizabeth Dourville's side of the family to follow at a later date.

The first document is the marriage record of René Rocheteau and Elizabeth Dourville in the original French. Red highlighted items reflect Alain Rocheteau's editing in July 2001 with a more modern French version by Alain immediately following. My English translation of the document follows with corrections also marked in red.

Author's Note: The year of René and Elizabeth's marriage brought the revolution and the beginning of the slave revolt in Haiti (1790 - 1804). Before it would end, the town of Jacmel would fall under seige by the forces of Toussaint Louverture and many French landowners would be massacred. This was a period of intense confusion and violent social change. Before it was over, René Rocheteau was dead at the age of 36 years and his home and lands had fallen into the hands of others. What became of his family, indeed even of the records of his children, will occupy family historians for years to come. The records revealed here show that near the time of his death, his then pregnant wife had found refuge, it seems, in the city of Port-au-Prince (see below. Perhaps it was from there that her family, the Dourvilles, the Delaunays (or Launays) and the De la Houssayes, later returned to France or emigrated to Louisiana and elsewhere. Legend says that a young boy named René Rocheteau (and some say another brother also) was smuggled out of the chaos in Haiti somehow to a place where a boat would take him from his destroyed home to safety in Louisiana where later, in 1817, he married Carmelita Beaudouin.

I believe that these and other documents still to be discovered will prove this to be René Rocheteau's origins and the basis behind a nearly two centuries old family tradition. RJR July 2001

On the 28th of December 1802 at the age of 36 years René Rocheteau died, and the widowed Elizabeth gave birth to a son, "Eugène", in Port-au-Prince four months later (31 April 1803).  [Note: probably not their only child, though records are lacking.]

Again, thanks to Alain Rocheteau, we have the citations the relevant death and birth certificates:
